Grand Entrances - Granite floors, Custom Paving Elevate Garages And Driveways By Robin Stansbury
- Excerpt from The Hartford Courant, Home & Real Estate, Sunday, October 29, 2000

"People are looking for something different than their neighbors',"
said builder Arnold Karp, who specializes in remodeling and new home construction in Fairfield County. Garages and driveways,
he said, "have gone from something no one cared about to very important parts of new home construction. People are paying a lot of attention."

And paying a lot more money. for example:

Garage doors. Standard doors for a three-car garage cost about $1,500. But some homeowners are now spending $10,000 or more for custom-designed doors. Some of the latest trends include new doors that are made to look like aging barn doors, and clear glass doors that show off an automobile collection. One bury homeowner installed two heaters to keep his Porsche warm throughout the winter. Another homeowner requested tile on the garage floor to protect his Ferrari from the dust.

Other features include built-in shelving, painted concrete floors, better lighting and more windows. One owner even hung a chandelier.

"The garage has to be more attractive," Karp said. "It doesn't look like a garage. It looks like an extension of the home."
